Textile Waste 101: Closet Cleanout

Event Image
Date: Sep 16 , 2026

Do you have clothes sitting in your closet unworn? Whether these items are old and unusable, have some life left, or are brand new with tags, they should never end up in the trash bin. While an estimated 80% of old clothing and textile waste goes to the landfill, there are plenty of options to give textile waste another life!

The next time you clean out your closet, consider these ways to do so sustainably:

  • Host a clothing swap with your family and friends
  • Host a yard sale
  • Donate items to a local thrift store
  • Sell items in good condition on an online selling platform
  • Reinvent clothing items by upcycling
  • Fix small holes, snags, or tears before purchasing a new item
  • Alter clothing to fit correctly to be worn
  • Cut up old t-shirts into rags
  • Recycle unwearable, stained, or torn items with companies such as Retold and Trashie

Looking to clear out your closet this fall? Great news! The City will be hosting a few opportunities for the community to recycle old clothes, swap wearable items, or even fix pieces that need to be mended.
