Wednesday evening, the City of Solana Beach City Council unanimously placed a local funding measure applied to hotel and lodging guests on the November ballot for voter consideration. If enacted, the measure would update the City’s 20-year-old hotel ordinance by 1% and would result in increased funding that would stay local to Solana Beach.

The proposed measure would not raise taxes on Solana Beach residents, it applies only to visitors who stay in local hotels and short-term lodging to address the impacts of tourism on the Solana Beach community.

“This measure gives voters the opportunity to secure a stable, locally controlled funding source to help maintain the essential services and public spaces our residents and local businesses value and rely on,” said Solana Beach City Manager Alyssa Muto.

Through a Solana Beach community survey and engagement effort, residents and community members identified local funding priorities such as preventing trash from entering lagoons and our beaches; keeping beaches, parks, and trails safe, clean, and well maintained; providing clean public restrooms at parks and beaches; and maintaining local lifeguards and upgrading coastal life-saving emergency medical equipment and technology.

"Our lifeguards respond to thousands of beach visitors every year, providing emergency medical care, water rescues, and public safety services that protect both residents and visitors," said Solana Beach Marine Safety Captain Greg Uruburu, "Maintaining trained lifeguards and modern life-saving facilities and equipment helps ensure we can continue providing the level of service and safety our community expects on our beaches."

If enacted, this measure would provide the City with an additional approximately $250,000 that would be reinvested back into the community to fund essential services and facilities in Solana Beach.
