Emergency Preparedness Week 4: Home Preparedness

Date: Sep 22 , 2026

Being ready for emergencies starts at home. Taking a few simple steps now can help keep your family safe during fires, floods, earthquakes, and other disasters.

Smoke alarms save lives by providing early warning if there is a fire in the home. Install smoke alarms inside every sleeping room, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of the home. Install carbon monoxide alarms in the proper locations and test all alarms monthly.

If your home is exposed to wildfire, remove combustible materials from around the structure and clear leaves and debris from roofs and gutters. Keeping the first five feet around your home free of easily ignitable materials can significantly reduce the risk from wind-blown embers.

Learn where your gas, electricity, and water shutoff valves are, and keep the right tools close by. Fasten tall furniture, TVs, and other heavy items so they won’t fall during an earthquake. If an earthquake happens, remember to Drop, Cover, and Hold On.

To prepare for flooding, keep gutters, drains, and drainage areas clear of debris. Store important documents, medications, and valuables in waterproof containers and never walk or drive through floodwater.

Prepared homes are more resilient. Take time this week to inspect your property and review your emergency and evacuation plans. A few minutes of preparation today can make all the difference when disaster strikes.
