Practical Tips for Fall Prevention
Falls are one of the most serious and preventable threats to independence as we age, yet they are often dismissed as an inevitable part of getting older. According to AARP, falls often mark a major turning point in a senior's life, with about 1 in 4 seniors falling each year and millions experiencing injuries that can lead to hospitalization or long-term disability.
Join us for an informative and engaging community presentation focused on helping you or your loved ones stay safe and independent at home. Hosted by Solana Beach Community Connections (SBCC), the program will be on Tuesday, May 12 at La Colonia Community Center at 6:00 PM. La Colonia is located at 715 Valley Avenue in Solana Beach.
Many falls result from a combination of manageable factors such as balance, home hazards, vision issues, and medication side effects. Our panel of speakers consists of Yvonne Dostal, a registered RPT with Wesley Palms; Jan Grossnickle, an RN, PHN with Community Christian Service Organization; and Ellen Rodarte, MD, who works as an independent contractor for Primary Physician Education. They will address practical tips to reduce fall risks at home, simple exercises to improve strength and balance, medication and health factors that may increase fall risks, and what to do if a fall occurs. A questionnaire will be distributed which enables attendees to do a personal fall risk assessment of their own.
This presentation is sponsored by Solana Beach Community Connections and the City of Solana Beach's Parks and Recreation Department. The talk is free and open to the public, and is especially valuable for older adults, caregivers, and family members. Come and learn how small changes can make a big difference in staying safe at home.
