- November Discussion: My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante
-
Beginning in the 1950s in a poor but vibrant neighborhood on the outskirts of Naples, Elena Ferrante's four-volume story spans almost sixty years, as its main characters, the fiery and unforgettable Lila and the bookish narrator, Elena, become women, wives, mothers, and leaders, all the while maintaining a complex and at times conflicted friendship. The first novel in the series follows Lila and Elena from their fateful meeting as ten-year-olds through their school years and adolescence.
Through the lives of these two women, Ferrante tells the story of a neighborhood, a city, and a country as it is transformed in ways that, in turn, also transform the relationship between two women.
Copies of My Brilliant Friend are available at the Mature Adult Center office. To reserve/pick up a copy call 858-509-2587. The book discussion is on Wednesday, November 11 at 1:15 PM in Room 16.
- December Discussion: Culpability by Bruce Holsinger
-
Set as a summer rental on the Chesapeake Bay, a riveting family drama about moral responsibility in the age of artificial intelligence, from the bestselling author of the "wise and addictive" (New York Times) The Gifted School.
When the Cassidy-Shaws' autonomous minivan collides with an oncoming car, seventeen-year-old Charlie is in the driver's seat, with his father, Noah, riding shotgun. In the back, tweens Alice and Izzy are on the phones, while their mother, Lorelei, a world leader in the field of artificial intelligence, is absorbed in her work. Yet each family member harbors a secret that implicates them in the accident.
Culpability explores a world newly shaped by chatbots, autonomous cars, drones, and other nonhuman forces in ways that are thrilling, challenging, and unimaginable provocative.
To reserve/pick up a copy call 858-509-2587. The book discussion is on Wednesday, December 9 at 1:15 PM in Room 16.
