Sandbags Disposal After a Storm
The City often receives questions about what to do with used sandbags after a storm. While the City does not take back used sandbags, there are plenty of good options for residents to consider.
With Super El Niño and other storms happening, here are a few smart options to consider when disposing of your sandbags:
-
Reuse: Given the season of recurring storms, it's a wise idea to keep your sandbags for potential future use. You can store them either filled or empty, but if they are filled, ensure that the sand remains clean and dry. Store the bags in a covered, above-ground location away from direct sunlight to maintain their effectiveness.
-
Beneficial Landscaping: If your sandbags were not exposed to foul water, chemicals, or petroleum products, consider repurposing the sand. Rake the sand from the bags into your soil, mix it into planters, or use it as a soil amendment for your flowerbeds. This eco-friendly approach benefits your garden while minimizing waste. Never empty sand into the street, gutter, storm drain, or onto the beach.
-
Proper Disposal: If you decide not to reuse your sandbags, dispose of empty sandbags in regular trash cans. It's important not to leave worn or damaged sandbags exposed to sunlight and weather for extended periods to prevent microplastics in the environment. Please do not put empty sandbags in the recycle bin.
-
Landfill Drop-off: It's advised not to place full sandbags in regular trash carts, bins, or dumpsters. Instead, local landfills are available to accept empty or filled sandbags that cannot be reused. Landfills like Miramar, Sycamore, Otay, and Borrego Springs are equipped to receive sandbags that were used for stormwater control during the recent cyclone.
-
Contaminated Sandbags: If you suspect that your sandbags have been contaminated by floodwater, sewage, chemicals, or petroleum products, handle them with protective gear, such as gloves and eyewear. Do not empty these sandbags into the environment. Proper disposal options include bringing them to select HHW landfills or arranging disposal through a hazardous waste contractor. It's recommended to contact the landfill facility beforehand, as additional protocols and documentation might be required.
-
City-Specific Information: Residents of other cities within the county should consult with their local jurisdiction or waste hauler for specific guidance on sandbag disposal and reuse.
