A Heartfelt Farewell to Dan King
The City of Solana Beach bids a heartfelt farewell to Dan “Danny” King, our Assistant City Manager, as he leaves the City after 23 years of exemplary service. While we are excited for Dan as he begins the next chapter in his career, his exceptional leadership, devoted service, and lasting impact on the City will not be forgotten.
Dan has left an indelible imprint on the organization. His strategic leadership played an essential role in every project the City has completed over the past two decades, including the formation of the Solana Energy Alliance, policy development and implementation at the Regional Solid Waste Association (RSWA), and ensuring cost-effective service delivery with the City’s partnership with EDCO. He also led numerous successful labor negotiations with the City’s employee groups, fostering collaboration, stability, and a workplace grounded in fairness, transparency, and shared respect. All of Dan's work is a reflection of both his institutional knowledge and his unwavering commitment to the community.
He has long been recognized as a grounding presence, “the definition of calm, cool, and collected”, whose thoughtful leadership anchored the organization through City Manager transitions, periods of uncertainty, and moments requiring clear and compassionate decision‑making. Colleagues widely appreciate his approachability, empathy, and diplomacy - qualities that strengthened communication across all departments and helped ensure complex issues were clearly understood at every level. Dan’s steady voice and balanced perspective provided essential stability during high‑pressure situations. He served as a valued mentor and sounding board for many, offering consistent support that helped colleagues navigate challenges and grow in their professional roles.
Through his devotion to public service and genuine care for others, Dan earned the trust of staff, elected officials, community partners, and residents alike, leaving a legacy defined not only by accomplishments but by character, mentorship, and meaningful relationships.
We extend our gratitude and warmest wishes. Thank you, Dan, for supporting and serving our community.
