- March Discussion: JAMES by Percival Everett
-
When Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he runs away until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck has faked his own death to escape his violent father. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.
Brimming with the electrifying humor and lacerating observations that have made Everett a literary icon, this brilliant and tender novel radically illuminates Jim’s agency, intelligence, and compassion as never before. James is destined to be a major publishing event and a cornerstone of twenty-first century American literature.
Copies of JAMES are available at the Mature Adult Center (MAC) or via Libby on your reading device. To reserve/pick up a copy from MAC call 858-509-2587.The book discussion is on Wednesday, March 11th at 1:15 pm in Room *16.(*Room change to accommodate AARP).
- April Discussion: The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton
-
Winner of the 1921 Pulitzer Prize, The Age of Innocence is an elegant, masterful portrait of desire and betrayal in old New York—now with a new introduction from acclaimed author Colm Tóibín for the novel’s centennial.
With vivid power, Wharton evokes a time of gaslit streets, formal dances held in the ballrooms of stately brownstones, and society people "who dreaded scandal more than disease." This is Newland Archer's world as he prepares to marry the docile May Welland.
Then, suddenly, the mysterious, intensely nonconformist Countess Ellen Olenska returns to New York after a long absence, turning Archer's world upside down.
This classic Wharton tale of thwarted love is an exuberantly comic and profoundly moving look at the passions of the human heart, as well as a literary achievement of the highest order.
Copies of The Age of Innocence will be available at the Mature Adult Center (MAC) or via Libby on your reading device. To reserve/pick up a copy from MAC call 858-509-2587. The book discussion is on Wednesday, April 8 at 1:15 pm in Room *16. (*Room change to accommodate AARP).
